SAFETY SHOWER -Typical Product Applications

WHAT ARE SAFETY SHOWERS? WHAT ARE DECONTAMINATION SHOWERS?
  • First Aid equipment to assist when accidents have caused chemical splashes, burns, foreign bodies in the eyes etc.

  • TWO MAIN CATEGORIES - Body Showers and Eye/Face Wash units (may be frost protected for outdoor use or unheated for indoor use).
  • Sometimes used on a daily basis by a number of personnel who need to use them to decontaminate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) before entering a controlled environment or exiting a controlled environment.
  • Deliver large volume of potable water (can be combined with cleaning fluid).
  • Normally plumbed into water main but may be supplied as a transportable unit with hose connections.
WHY ARE THEY REQUIRED?  WHY ARE THEY REQUIRED?
  • To minimize injury in the event of accidents.
  • LEGISLATION - Health and Safety at Work (first aid) Regulations 1981 - an employer shall provide, or ensure that there are provided, such equipment and facilities as are adequate and appropriate in the circumstances for enabling First Aid to be rendered to the employee if they are injured or become ill at work. - in the event of chemical burns, chemical in the eye or foreign bodies in the eye where the object cannot be removed readily, irrigation with clean, cool water is recommended
  • To minimize risks from contaminated substances.
    Decontamination Showers can also be enhanced by the addition of a sump and drainage system, for collection of contaminated water after use.

DO DON'T
  1. Ensure that these equipment be used for the purpose for which they are intended for. They only serve to supplement first-aid treatment.
  2. Ensure that all employees have a general ideas of what the emergency equipment installed are for. Employees who are exposed or work in hazardous areas must be instructed of the locations of the equipment and properly trained on the used of the equipment.
  3. Emergency equipment should be installed as close as possible to hazardous workplaces and clearly identified as eyewash stations or drench shower. The path to these equipment should be free from obstructions.
  4. One of the most important consideration when installing emergency equipment is to ensure that sufficient supply of water is readily available to the equipment at all times.
  5. Ensure that the piping should be not be smaller than the inlet of the equipment and have a minimum of 45 psi (3 Bar) of incoming pressure. The ideal incoming pressure at all times should be between 45 to 60 psi ( 3 to 4 Bar).
  6. Only products that meet the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z358.1) for Emergency Eyewash and Shower Equipment should be installed
  1. Do not discontinue the use of personal protective equipment such as like eye and face protection and protective clothing. The installation of emergency equipment should be seen as a substitute for this personal protective equipment.
  2. Eye / face wash units should not be used if it is known that eye injury is due to metal or some other solid fragment. Medical attention must be sought immediately.
  3. Do not alter the dimensions or heights or any parts of the equipment  as recommended in the manufacturer brochure as they comply with the ANSI Requirement.
